Ole' Vegas Charm: Casino Boy's Favorite Downtown Hotels

Four Queens Vegas

Four queens? Jeepers that's a lot of women to keep track of...

Cheap Downtown Vegas Hotels

Granted, everything's cheaper Downtown. But these guys are serious about savings.

The prices at Downtown Vegas hotels are bound to make your head spin. Seriously, you won't find this many cheap hotels in one area ANYWHERE. And by cheap, we don't mean Motel 6 rates; no, we're talking campsite-level cheap. Weekday rates at some of our favorite Downtown Las Vegas hotels hover in the $25 range during the weekdays, with only a marginal spike on weekends.

However, it's not just the prices we love when it comes to old-standby Downtown hotels in Vegas like the Gold Spike Hotel or the Main Street Station - it's the vibe, too! Locals like to kick it Downtown just as much as the tourists because the slots are looser, the atmosphere less kitschy and the potential to get into mischief aplenty. Here are a couple examples of what you'll find at Downtown Vegas hotels...

  • Four Queens Vegas: OK, so maybe the clientele is a little grayer, and there's a bit of a DIY-approach from their clerks, but there's a lot to like about this Downtown joint, otherwise. The casino floor is stocked with penny slots, $3 Blackjack can be found on slow days, and the front desk will get you in and out in a hurry. (Generally speaking.) Plus, it's right on Fremont Street, putting you in the heart of Downtown Vegas.
  • El Cortez: One of the most popular Downtown hotels in Las Vegas with Cheapos, the El Cortez boasts weekend rates that often fall in the category of  "Dirt Cheap." Cheapos love the price and the no-nonsense attitude on the casino floor (Basically, the clientele comes to gamble - early and often.), and the sports book isn't half-bad, either. Plus, like the aforementioned Four Queens, this joint sits on Fremont as well.

The Plaza Las Vegas

You look different... Did you do something with your hair?

The Plaza Las Vegas

New Look, Same Ole' Charm

Even Downtown hotels in Vegas are renovated once in a while.

Yeah, we love the ole' Vegas charm of our favorite Downtown hotels in Vegas. That being said, we could all use an upgrade now and then. The following Downtown Las Vegas hotels have enjoyed a face-lift over the last couple of years, and for that we say, "Bravo!"

  • The Plaza: Once a Las Vegas behemoth, The Plaza struggled through a pretty continuous slide before finally closing for renovations. Several months and more than $35 million later, The Plaza is back and better than ever. There are numerous new eateries to chow down at, including the popular Hash House a Go Go and the infamous Oscar's Steakhouse, and their entertainment options are good for both ladies (American Storm) and gentlemen (The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas) alike.
  • Las Vegas Club: These renovations are so new that they're not even done yet! (As of August, 2012 that is.) This is a seriously good thing - the Las Vegas Club was in as dire a shape as any of the Downtown Las Vegas hotels near Fremont Street. Here's to hoping that the renovations don't spike their notoriously-cheap prices...

Downtown Vegas hotels are where Casino Boy likes let to let his hair down. This is where Cheapo Vegas made its name - in the depths of Fremont Street and its surrounding area, where ole' Las Vegas still lives on in the form of hotels charging under a Grant (that's a $50, Cheapos) and beers costing a little over a Washington. Ahh yes, this is where the Cheapos truly come to play - at Downtown Las Vegas hotels!

If you REALLY want to save your hard-earned (or not-so-hard-earned ... whatever) cash for the tables on your upcoming trip to Las Vegas, consider staying in one of the Downtown Vegas hotels near Fremont Street. Seriously - the area is filled with hotels that offer rooms from $50 and under, especially during the week.

If you've been to Las Vegas just once or twice, odds are you probably stayed on The Strip. Let's face it - when you think of Sin City, you think of The Boulevard. However, there's a reason veteran gamblers and Vegas aficionados prefer to stay Downtown - it's cheaper! Plus, the slots are proven to be looser, the drinks are reasonably-priced and the atmosphere has that ole' Vegas vibe to it that the Strip simply can't touch. Not to mention you'll see a whole different side of Vegas, so it's like visiting a brand new city all over again.

Casino Boy suggests you try something different on your upcoming Vegas vacation and give one of the Downtown Las Vegas hotels above a shot! We think you'll be pleasantly surprised with the comfort, and your wallet will surely thank you. Not, ya' know, literally or anything, unless you have a talking wallet, which would be both awesome and weird...
